The 25th June 2016 saw the successful hosting of the Upper Highway Area Street Store in conjunction with St Mary’s DSG and City Hill Church Pinetown.
The Street Store concept is the world’s first rent-free, premises-free, free pop-up clothing store for the poor, found entirely on the street and curated by the public.
As a keen supporter of our local community, Rokkit undertook to get involved in this wonderful initiative, providing support, arranging T-Shirts for the event volunteers and also videoing the event free of charge.
With strategic drop off points situated around the Upper Highway Area, the Street Store managed to serve 1021 shoppers, with each person receiving six items of clothing and a light meal.
The motto for the day was “Hang up, help out, and bring dignity to the homeless and disadvantaged of the Upper Highway Area!” and we can say without a doubt, that with fantastic help and passion from everyone involved, that this was achieved on the day.
We would like to congratulate and thank everyone involved. Hope to see you all again next year!
From Jo Kinsey, Deputy Head: Pastoral, St Mary’s DSG Kloof:
Dear Tonya and Clinton
On behalf of The Street Store committee, please accept our thanks for everything Rokkit so willingly undertook to assist with The Street Store for the homeless and disadvantaged people in our community.
We served 1021 shoppers and they each received six items of clothing and a light meal. A prayer team was also available to pray for those who wanted prayer.
We believe that our community was changed by this event and it would not have been possible without the willing assistance of churches, local businesses and schools.
Once again, thank you for your invaluable support of this outreach project.
Kind regards
Jo Kinsey
